23 (who?)
:film: Storm over Gondolin, a brand new Silmarillion inspired movie in making. Some of you have probably heard of it after seeing chvacher's Gondolin concept art to it…
Here are homepage and FB fanpage of the project:…
I guess it is still in preproduction phase, fingers crossed for coming true :fingerscrossed:

Update - here is the first video blog from the creators:…

Update 11 XII 2013 - there will be no Storm over Gondolin, unfortunately The Tolkien Estate has forbidden making it - message form the filmmakers published at the projects fanpage at Facebook:

Dear fans,
We come to you today with some sad news. The Tolkien Estate, the legal body which manages the rights to Tolkien’s works, has asked us to immediately cease working on the movie Storm over Gondolin. Like you, we are extremely disappointed to have to stop the production of a movie inspired by Tolkien’s legendarium. However, the entire team is staying on board and we are more excited than ever by the opportunity to create a new world inspired by the ancient mythologies. Much of our work still stands, and we are therefore announcing the production of a new fantasy film where you will find elves and orcs in an original universe. Thank you for your support and your fidelity ; a new step in our journey is beginning, and it is for you that we are taking it!

:film: Another movie in production is The Hobbit based animation -… This one should be done for Christmas 2014 :fingerscrossed:

:film: Italian production based on stories of the II Age:
Diari dalla Terza Era…
 - this movie is completed, we're waiting for the promised English subtitles

:film: Wings over Arda, a finalized project, yet not available to see on-line, apart trailers and a few production clips at YT:…

Are there any news on the raoulmike's Fingolfin vs Morgoth stop motion project?

According to it's FB page Ancanar is still on hold:…

:film: Born of Hope is latest LotR inspired movie made by JRRT fans.
More details in the news article here:… and at

Other interesting movies are:
:bulletpurple: The Hunt for Gollum
:bulletpurple: The Sons of Elrond & behind the scenes
:bulletpurple: Firiel - interesting animation with beautiful songs by Aire and Saruman I'm in love with this one

Movies in production, apart The Hobbit of course:
:bulletpurple: Ancanar inspired by the history of Gondolin, though officially not being strictly JRRT works related movie:
:bulletwhite: HQ trailer…
:bulletwhite: Death is a Gift:…
:bulletwhite: Finlomë's Fortunes:…
:bulletwhite: YouTube link…
News at Facebook
:bulletpurple: There is also Arrival at Esgaroth, to me seems to be more distant from Arda given a Warcraft-like elf appearing there:
HQ… &… + main site…
:bulletpurple: Finally it looks like  The Silmarillion Film Project… is still active

Have you seen those? What do you think of them?

I'm especially awaiting Ancanar, the story is not directly from Arda, but I feel it will have the mood and mystery of The Silmarillion. I still need to see Born of Hope and The Hunt for Gollum, unfortunately my PC doesn't want to display HD movies easily.

Firiel inspired me to make my own test, but it'll be a long road till I can call it a movie:… :meditation:

Thanks for the list! The only ones I've seen out of these are Born of Hope (loved that movie) and The Hunt for Gollum (also loved it, though not as much). So sad that Storm over Gondolin was cancelled... I would have loved to see that story unfold on the movie screen.

Is the entire Tolkien family against the Silmarillion being filmed? I know Christopher Tolkien, despite being the amazing guy that he is bringing us  the Silmarillion, is severely against the existing Middle Earth movies. However, he IS 89, and if he passes away, who will inherit the copyright to the Silm? Hopefully the rest of the family is more supportive of film-making. (As well as the fact that it will bring greater publicity and fans to Tolkien -- I mean COME ON. An entire movie/TV series about Elves???) Of course, with more creative and monetary control of the rights.

They will be the next generation, so there's always hope :)

oh no, why? Why would they forbid making Storm over Gondolin? They defy Tolkien's will. The Professor himself wrote: “I would draw some of the great tales in fullness, and leave many only placed in scheme, and sketched. The cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama.”

I know this quote and I believe such move could be used to advantage both for advertising Tolkien's works and to Tolkien Estate, but TE seems to think other way :(

It is such a shame!:( (Sad)  People admire LOTR and The Hobbit movies, and know nothing of The Silmarillion, even though it is  better (in my opinioin).
Maybe one day TE would change their mind... We can only hope.

I haven't seen any of these! I've heard about The Hunt for Gollum, and tried to watch, but something urgent happened :| I had the feeling that Storm over Gondolin would not continue, it was a matter of time before the Tolkien Estate find out. It's a shame, I really wanted to watch it. Although a film inspired by mythology seems to be interesting as well :)
I'll try to watch each one of these films! And cross fingers to the others in process get completed!

The Hunt for Gollum and Born of Hope are available on-line, at YT, Dailymotion etc, other productions should be there, too.
Well, if TE keeps on saying "no" and stopping fannish productions we will not have much movies to await in the future.
